LIGHTING PROJECT
EWB is partnering with UCSB's Solid State Lighting & Energy Center to design an efficient and inexpensive LED light fixture appropriate for use in Africa, in communities that currently lack power and lighting. Our objective is to design a product that is relatively small and portable yet can provide sufficient lighting for a home, so children can study and other work can be done in the home after dark. Additionally our light should be usable in conjunction with several others to light larger areas such as a community center.
By designing a simple and inexpensive housing we aim to create a product that can at the very least be assembled if not partially manufactured in Africa, so as to support the local industry as much as possible. In order to accomplish all of this we are working with a partner group in Ghana, which has local representatives here in California, to develop an educational curriculum and distribution network for our light.
