Cross-Cultural Engineering - What Engineers and Scientists can Learn from Malian Farmers

Special Seminar
Hosted by Engineers Without Borders - UCSB
Prof. Scott Lacy, Fairfield University Anthropology Dept.
Wednesday, 16 May -  6pm
Engineering Science Building - Room 2001

Prof. Lacy, an anthropologist with almost 20 years of experience working in rural Mali, has been a close mentor to, and collaborator with UCSB's chapter of Engineers Without Borders. He is also the founder of African Sky, an NGO with several projects working to help ensure food security and educational opportunities in Mali. The interactions between social scientists, engineers, crop scientists and Malian farmers that have formed to work on these projects have led to some fascinating insights about cross-cultural collaborations.

Support for your adventure on the Coast

EWB-UCSB has checked the tides, measured the distances, and scoped out the runs. This event will take place at low tide when you won't get washed away to sea. You'll be able to run on packed sand and the beach is flat with minimal camber.

EWB-UCSB will provide:

- Aid stations with water, Gatorade, energy bars

- Unofficial timing

- Post-run “Make-Your-Own-Bagel-Sandwich” Buffet at El Cap

- Sweep runner with First Aid Kit and cellphone for emergency
